PermianMAP: A Data Platform to Track Methane Emissions from Oil and Gas Drilling in the Permian Basin
Stone collaborated with the Environmental Defense Fund to create PermianMAP, an interactive online platform tracking methane emissions in the Permian Basin, a major oil and gas field in Texas and New Mexico. Using ArcGIS Online applications, Stone integrated diverse data sources to visualize and highlight methane emission levels. The platform offers secure data storage, ongoing data uploads, and a public website featuring maps and charts. Python scripts automate data processing and operator identification, enabling quick updates. Launched in April 2020, PermianMAP includes dashboards for public viewing and operator response, encouraging rapid action on emission alerts. The complete project is available at permianmap.org.
