Senior Ecotoxicologist Alan Samel Joins Stone
We are excited to announce that Alan Samel, MS, has joined Stone as a senior ecotoxicologist. With nearly 40 years of experience at DuPont and FMC, Alan brings extensive ecotoxicology expertise with pesticide regulatory processes, including the US EPA Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act; the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development; the Canadian Pest Management Regulatory Agency; the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources; the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority; and other global regulatory protocols.
Alan has held pivotal roles in the crop protection industry. As a senior global regulatory ecotoxicologist, he’s served as study director or ecotox regulatory study monitor for both laboratory and field studies. His involvement has included study design, data generation, interpretation, and final report writing. In his role as risk assessor, Alan has supported products submitted for global registrations, interacting with regulators around the world. Alan also has an extensive background in screening-level studies, including experience with new-approach methodologies. He has been involved with endangered species assessments, gaining a firm understanding of the complexities of these ever-changing assessment practices.
Alan’s formal training includes a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Pennsylvania State University and a master’s degree in entomology and applied ecology from the University of Delaware, with an emphasis on aquatic insects.
As an active member of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC), Alan has introduced more than 30 posters and oral presentations at annual meetings in North America and Europe, and participated in committees and interest groups. He has served as chairman of the SETAC North America and Global Science committees and stays involved as session chair, short-course instructor, and in other capacities.
A Havertown, Pennsylvania, resident who will be working remotely, Alan enjoys beer-making, pickleball, and racquetball. He also volunteers as stream-watch coordinator and first vice president for the Darby Creek Valley Association, a local non-profit watershed group where he’s been a member for more than 30 years and a past president.
Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Alan!
