Work continues on state testing of PCBs in schools
In 2021, a new state law tasked Vermont with testing all schools built or renovated before 1980 for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in indoor air — the first state to do so. Stone was one of the consultants selected by Vermont’s Department of Environmental Conservation (VT DEC) to lead this process. At each of 60 assigned schools, our scientists perform a building materials inventory to develop a sampling strategy, and then conduct indoor air sampling to determine if there are unacceptable levels of PCBs in indoor air. We will continue to work with districts that have schools with concerning PCB levels — as well as VT DEC — to plan further testing and determine sources of contamination.
